While the two basic categories of safes are fire safes and burglary safes, there are numerous types of safes within those categories.
Fire safes, sometimes called record safes, are designed to protect paper from heat from fires. The internal temperature of these safes cannot exceed 350 degrees, which is the temperature paper begins to char. Fire safes are further rated on how long they can resist furnace-level fires, and on their resistance to flash fires and to being dropped.
Fire safes also are used to protect computer and film media but should not be used to protect other valuables, because fire safes are designed to protect documents from fire rather than being designed to thwart burglaries.
Burglary safes include in-floor safes, depository safe, money safes, wall safes, gun safes and vaults.
- In-floor safes are designed to be installed below grade in a concrete floor. They offer excellent burglary protection and are ideal for homes and small businesses.
- Depository safes allow money to be deposited into a locked compartment either from outside the safe or from inside the safe, where the deposited money is accessible only be designated personnel.
- Money safes provide excellent temporary protection of valuables or large amounts of cash. They are highly resistant to attacks using tools. These safes are commonly used by retail stores, jewelers, gas stations and financial institutions. For greater protection, money safes that are torch-resistant as well as tool-resistant are available.
- Wall safes are designed to fit between wall studs and are the depth of 2x4 framing; thus they are commonly only 3-1/2 inch in depth. Because these safes are in the walls, they can be hiddeb. But they do not provide a high degree of security.
- Gun safes are designed to secure weapons but offer a limited amount of burglary and fire protection
- Vaults are generally built with concrete block walls and security vault doors. Vault doors are designed to offer either fire protection or security protection.
